Tutoring

Introduction

I am a very friendly and experienced computer science graduate of Imperial College, London. I can provide tuition in the following areas (please click links to see more information below):

• Computer science and programming (up to and including degree level)
• Internet website design and programming (all standards)
• General computing (for absolute beginners to intermediates), for example:
  • Using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications
  • Using the Internet and email
  • Using printers, scanners, digital cameras, and editing photos
  • Using video capture/editing equipment and software
• Maths, Physics and Chemistry (up to and including GCSE level)

I have a first-class degree in Computing from Imperial College, and an MSc in Advanced Computing from the same university.

Whilst I can provide tuition in many aspects of computer science, to date most tutoring work has covered the following subjects:

• Java programming:
  • Object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts
  • 1st/2nd year level material
  • Group projects
  • Graphical User Interfaces (Java AWT/Swing)

  • Basic programming concepts

  • Prolog - 1st/2nd years
  • HTML and PHP - 1st/2nd years

I have over seven years of experience in website design and programming. In the past, I have designed and implemented a number of websites for a range of clients. I have written tutorials on HTML, and have undertaken many large Internet-based projects requiring considerable HTML and PHP expertise.

I can provide tuition in the following subject-related areas:

• HTML and CSS programming
• Website design and usability
• PHP and server-side programming
• Database backends and shopping-cart implementation
• (I do not provide expert tuition in Perl programming; beginners, maybe!)

Since I was a teenager I have provided tuition in general computing. Usually, this is to people with little or no experience with computers, and who (more often than not) are pretty terrified of the things!

Previous tutees include a first-time computer buyer, an art dealer looking to move their business onto the computer, a young family with Internet troubles, and a small-business owner wanting to establish a website.

From the outset, it should be noted that I have no formal teaching qualification (e.g. a PGCE). However, I do have the following academic qualifications:

These qualifications combined with my tutoring experience mean that I am very capable of teaching children and adults in many of these subjects.

Whilst I have relatively little experience in tutoring children, for many years I have taught tennis to both individuals and large groups of children.
